I think the universe heard me

Today started out like any other -- with 20 minutes to make a stiff cuppa joe, feed and dress three people, and get one to school in time. Most days, by the time I get back home I'm finally awake and appropriately caffeinated, at which point I like to check my email. Well lo and behold, today I had a very special one waiting for me... one I had to read over and over again to make sure I was actually awake and not still dreaming.

I had completely forgotten that back in December I donated to Menu For Hope, a culinary bloggers fundraising effort that donates food to school children in Africa. With each raffle ticket purchased, you could apply to win various prizes. My prize of choice was to go to a Master Food Styling Course in Los Angeles, along with my favorite food photographer, Matt Armendariz from Matt Bites. In a million years, I never thought I'd win... BUT I DID!

OMG.

I am beyond thrilled about this for so many reasons. Remember my list of 101 things to do? (That is if you managed to find it! I'm sneaky like that.) Anyway, I've been racking my brain about how I was going to complete #29, which involved getting to LA to meet with Matt, as he graciously offered last year to let me observe him in action. I had all but given up, assuming that I'd missed my opportunity. In case you haven't been following him, he's grown incredibly popular this past year and has been so busy, I couldn't bear to ask him to meet with little, old me. But now I don't have to worry about that. I just have to worry about the fact that I have NO skills in food styling and that I haven't written my list of questions to ask him! I'll be getting on that right away.

But in the meantime... I'm going to enjoy the idea that in two weeks I'll be learning how to "make bacon look ruffled and hot" and how to "plate and garnish" all kinds of breakfast & dinner foods and even frozen desserts! Not to mention, I get to see my friends that live in LA while I'm there. ALONE. Sans children.

Somebody pinch me!

With that, I'm going to jump out of my skin over the weekend and thank my lucky stars that as fate would have it, one of my dreams is going to come true and that, my friends, makes this a "menu of hope" in more than one way.

Natural Born Detective

If I were to have a profession other than photography, there's no question I would've liked to have been a spy in another life. I have a penchant for searching for clues, uncovering the truth, and seeking the answer to a big mystery.

Judging by the lack of response from my last post, I figured I'd better give you one, big clue to help you understand that the answer was there right in front of you. You just had to look for it!

Sadly, only two people found it. Kudos to Alphababy and Walking Punchline for caring enough to really read into the post and not just gloss over it.

I'm kidding! I know some of you have more important things to deal with like new babies and toe jam. But if you are curious as to my whereabouts, then go back and find the answer.  Isn't it more fun to have to work a little?  I'm barreling along over here and very excited about this new year!

On the horizon

Over the course of my blogging experience, I've seen various people write out their personal to-do lists like "30 before 30" or "100 things to do before I die." I've always wanted to do one of these and so a couple of weeks ago, I started writing one out. My friend Walking Punchline posted hers soon after, so I thought I'd follow the Day Zero format she used. It gives you nearly three years to complete it, which seems like an ample amount of time, no?

While I was perusing the Day Zero website, I saw the link to "Learning to Love You More"- which I've had on my site for some time now, but hadn't clicked on lately. I've been a big fan of Miranda July for a few years and the assignments on this site are fantastic. I urge you to take a look at the list. There are several tasks on there I intend to complete!

As you can see, I have a lot to do! #28 is my first priority. And I'm going to need #70 in order to pay for all of these vacations! Either way, I'm really excited to start this series of projects. My next goal is to plan out specific dates and deadlines. So, I do hope you'll understand my need for a blogging break and patiently await my return!

Until then....
